Tamil New Year Festival 2026: Bigger, Brighter, and Back at Girraween Park

The Tamil New Year — known as Puthandu or Sithirai Varuda Pirappu — is one of the most cherished celebrations in the Tamil calendar. It marks the beginning of the month of Chithirai and carries with it centuries of tradition, togetherness, and hope for the year ahead. And this April, the Western Sydney Tamil community is coming together once again to celebrate in style.

After a phenomenal debut in 2025 that brought over 1,000 people to Girraween Park, the Tamil New Year Festival is returning on Sunday, 19 April 2026 — and it's set to be even bigger.

A Festival Born from Community

Last year's inaugural festival was a landmark moment for the Tamil community in Western Sydney. Organised by the Toongabbie Tamil Trade Association, the event transformed Girraween Park into a vibrant hub of music, dance, food, and cultural pride. Families travelled from across Sydney to take part, and the energy on the day was electric.

The overwhelming response sent a clear message: this community was ready for a festival of its own. The 2026 edition answers that call with an expanded program, more performers, additional food vendors, and even more activities for families and young people.
